At what age can a child start babysitting?

ORS: 163.545:  A person having custody or control of a child under 10 years of age commits the crime of child neglect in the second degree if, with criminal negligence, the person leaves the child unattended in or at any place for such period of time as may be likely to endanger the health or welfare of such child.

There is no age in state law which places a minimum age on those who can do child care. The statute listed above, however, gives guidance to parents indicating that they must not leave children in a situation which would likely endanger the health or welfare of the child. It places the responsibility on the parent to determine that the caregivers and circumstances they choose will not endanger their children.
